The tools that put you on air, and the handful of settings that decide how it looks.

Hardware gets the attention, but software is where most streams are actually won or lost. A modest machine with correct encoder settings looks better than an expensive one running defaults, and no microphone fixes a bitrate your upload cannot sustain.

The stack below is ordered the way you will need it rather than the way it gets sold to you. Almost every tool on this page is free, and the paid ones are mostly charging for convenience you can have for nothing if you are willing to read a settings panel.

1. A broadcaster

This is the program that captures your game, your camera and your microphone, mixes them into one video and sends it to the platform. Nothing else in your setup matters until this works. OBS Studio, Streamlabs and XSplit all do the same core job, and the difference between them is how much they do for you versus how much they let you change.

OBS Studio is free, open source, and the one nearly every guide and plugin assumes you are running. Streamlabs is OBS with a friendlier interface and alerts and overlays already built in, which saves setup time and costs some performance and some control. XSplit is the paid option and earns its money in production-heavy work rather than solo game streaming.

2. Your audio chain

Audio is the part of a stream people leave over, and most of it is handled in software rather than bought. Before spending anything, spend an evening in your broadcaster audio filters: a noise gate to cut the room between sentences, light noise suppression for fan and keyboard hum, and a compressor so your excited voice and your quiet voice reach the viewer at roughly the same volume.

Set your microphone and your desktop audio to the same sample rate. Mismatched rates are the most common cause of drift, where your voice slides gradually out of sync across a long broadcast.

3. Alerts and overlays

Follower and subscriber alerts, chat boxes and on-screen counters are browser sources: a URL from a service like Streamlabs or StreamElements dropped into a scene. They are quick to add and quick to overdo. Two or three is plenty at the start.

Overlays are the same idea in static form. Free packs are genuinely fine early, and a clean layout with a readable webcam frame beats an animated one that covers the game.

4. A chat bot

A bot handles the moderation you cannot do while playing: link and spam filtering, caps limits, timed messages, and simple commands so you are not typing your schedule into chat every ten minutes. Nightbot, StreamElements and Moobot all cover this and all are free.

Set it up before you need it. The stream where you first need moderation is not the stream where you want to be learning the settings.

5. Everything else

Scene switchers, deck software, capture card utilities, plugin packs. All optional, and all easier to judge once the four layers above are stable. If you are still fighting dropped frames, more software will not help.

The Settings That Decide Everything

Four settings account for most of the visible difference between a stream that looks good and one that does not. The rest is decoration.

Bitrate

How much data you send per second. Too low and fast motion turns to mush. Too high and your connection cannot sustain it, which is worse than too low, because the stream drops frames rather than just looking soft. Whatever number you pick, your upload speed needs real headroom above it rather than a close match.

Twitch is where this got complicated in 2026. Its broadcast health guidance still names 6000 kbps as the ceiling, and for an ordinary stream that is still the right number. But on 17 June 2026 Twitch moved its Dual Format and 2K options out of testing. Dual Format, which sends a vertical and a horizontal feed from one stream, opened to every streamer. 2K, meaning 1440p, was limited to Partners and Affiliates, and it carried higher bitrates with it: 1440p over HEVC rose to 9 Mbps, and the 1080p rendition inside a 2K Enhanced Broadcasting stream rose to 7.5 Mbps.

The trap is that Twitch still describes an ordinary stream top rendition as 1080p60 at 6 Mbps on its Enhanced Broadcasting page, and the two pages have not been reconciled. So the honest answer is conditional. If you are not running Enhanced Broadcasting in 2K, treat 6000 as your ceiling. If you are, the higher figures apply to you, and most guides on the web have not caught up.

Encoder

Whether your graphics card or your processor does the compression. With a reasonably recent NVIDIA or AMD card, use its hardware encoder and leave the processor free for the game. Software encoding on the CPU can look marginally better at the same bitrate, but only with processor headroom to spare, which most single-machine streamers do not have.

Keyframe interval

Set it to 2 seconds. Not automatic. Platforms use keyframes to build the lower quality options viewers fall back to on poor connections, and an automatic interval breaks that.

Resolution and frame rate

Pick one to protect. Fast games with heavy motion look better at 720p60 than at 1080p30. Slower games and talk content survive 1080p30 comfortably. Running 1080p60 on a bitrate that cannot support it looks worse than either.

What To Skip

Software that consistently disappoints relative to the attention it gets:

  • Paid overlay bundles, early. They solve a problem you do not have yet. A plain layout is not what is limiting your growth.
  • Plugin stacking. Every plugin is one more thing that can crash mid-broadcast. Add them one at a time, and only to solve a problem you actually have.
  • A second streaming machine, early. Nearly always an encoder settings problem in an expensive disguise.
  • Multistreaming, early. Splitting a small audience across platforms makes every one of them look emptier, and several platforms have rules about it worth reading first.
  • Optimiser and booster utilities. They mostly change settings you could change yourself, and they hide what was actually wrong.

Software sits between two things this page does not cover. Below it is the hardware, where the order you buy in matters as much as the order you install in. Above it are the platforms, each with its own encoder rules, payout thresholds and moderation tools.

Get the software right first. It is free, and it is the layer where the largest quality gains are available to someone who has not spent anything yet.

What software do I need to start streaming?

One broadcaster, and nothing else. OBS Studio is free and will put you live tonight. Alerts, overlays and bots are all additions to a stream that already works.

Is OBS or Streamlabs better?

OBS if you want control and the widest compatibility with guides and plugins. Streamlabs if you want alerts and overlays configured for you and will trade some performance and flexibility for that. Both are free, and switching later costs you an evening.

Why does my stream drop frames?

Almost always one of three things: a bitrate your upload cannot sustain, a processor overloaded by software encoding, or wireless networking. Work through them in that order, and see Twitch dropped frames for the full diagnosis, because the three failures look identical and have different fixes.

Do I need to pay for streaming software?

No. The free tools are what most streamers use, including large ones. Paid options buy convenience and production features rather than stream quality.

What bitrate should I use?

It depends on the platform, your upload speed and what you stream. On Twitch, 6000 kbps is the ceiling for an ordinary stream and a safe target for 1080p60 if your upload holds it comfortably. Enhanced Broadcasting in 2K changes that, and is covered above.
