A capture card takes a video signal from an HDMI source, such as a console, a second computer or a camera, and brings it into your computer so your broadcast software can use it. It solves a routing problem. It does not make a stream look better on its own, and many streamers never need one.

Do you need one?
- Streaming PC games on one computer: no. Your broadcast software captures the game directly. A capture card adds nothing here.
- Streaming from a console: often yes. PlayStation and Xbox can broadcast directly to some platforms, but the built-in option offers limited control. A capture card lets you use OBS or similar with overlays, alerts, a webcam and your own encoder settings.

Specs that matter
Capture resolution vs passthrough
This is the most confusing part of capture card marketing. Passthrough is the signal the card forwards to your TV or monitor so you can play normally. Capture is what the card sends to your computer for the stream or recording. Many cards advertised as “4K” pass through 4K to your display but only capture 1080p. For live streaming, 1080p capture at 60fps is usually all you need, since that is what most streams go out at. 4K capture matters mainly if you record for YouTube.
Passthrough refresh rate, HDR and VRR
If you play at 120Hz or higher, or use variable refresh rate, check that the card passes those through. A card with older HDMI passthrough can limit your display to 60Hz, which competitive players will notice. Cards with HDMI 2.1 passthrough avoid this.
External USB or internal PCIe
External USB cards are portable and easy to set up, and they work with laptops. Check that your computer has the right USB version for the card; high-resolution cards need fast ports. Internal PCIe cards sit inside a desktop, avoid USB bandwidth contention and tend to have slightly lower latency, but require opening your case.
Latency
Always play on the passthrough signal or your console’s direct connection to the display, never on the preview inside your broadcast software, which runs behind. Passthrough latency on current cards is low enough that most players will not notice it.
Console setup notes
PlayStation 5: turn off HDCP
PS5 applies HDCP copy protection to its HDMI output, which blocks capture. Turn it off under Settings, System, HDMI, then disable Enable HDCP. Some media apps will not play while it is off, so switch it back on when you watch films or TV. Xbox and Nintendo consoles generally do not apply HDCP to gameplay, although media apps may still refuse to play through a capture card.
Audio and party chat
The card captures the console’s HDMI audio, which carries game sound. Party or voice chat may not be included depending on your console’s audio settings, so check that viewers can hear your teammates if you want them to. Your own microphone should normally go straight into your computer, not through the console.
Resolution and HDR
If your stream looks washed out, HDR is the usual cause. Either capture in SDR by turning off HDR on the console while streaming, or use a card and software that handle the conversion properly.

Testing the waters
Generic, very low-cost USB capture sticks show up in OBS without drivers and capture at modest quality, typically 1080p at 30fps or 720p at 60fps with visible compression. They are a reasonable way to find out whether console streaming is for you before spending properly, but not a long-term solution.
Most console streamers: 1080p60 capture with 4K passthrough

Do I need a capture card to stream PC games?
