OpenMW is the best way to relive The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

OpenMW GamerZakh The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind has never looked so good. OpenMW comes with improved graphics, better textures, longer rendering distances, and more.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, like World of Warcraft, signified a before and after in Western RPG games. But unlike World of Warcraft, Morrowind has largely been forgotten… or so we thought. GamerZakh, one of the YouTubers who promotes youth and adult audiences to continue to play old games, has brought to the attention of many people an open-source engine replacement called OpenMW, which takes the original Bethesda and updates it for 2021.

Reliving a classic

For those unfamiliar with The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind OpenMW project, it is a contemporary, free open-source engine that attempts to provide a more flexible and adaptable version of the game. Not only that, but it also has the role of adapting the game to operate on contemporary systems. As GamerZakh explains in his video, if you download the main game and then add graphic improvement modifications to it, you will most likely have a bad gaming experience.

OpenMW has been in development since 2008. In November 2021, a new version of this open-source engine (0.47.0) was released. The developers have resolved more than 180 issues that had been reported by users who had tried the 0.46.0 version. In addition, with this updated version, certain problems in the old base game that were causing incompatibilities with new hardware have been fixed.

Among the most important modifications mentioned by GamerZakh in this new version of

  • Increased range of vision due to the basic implementation of distant objects.
  • Reworked the lighting system, as now more than 8 lights per object are supported.
  • The physics of the objects has been improved allowing less use of PC resources, since the framerate was associated with the physics of the game.
  • A new third person view has been added, with an angle from the player’s shoulder.
  • Characters now have more fluid movements

The list of changes added in this new version is much longer. One thing to note is that many of the features and changes added in this new version are disabled by default, so we recommend that all players who wish to relive The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind on PC, take a stroll through the engine’s website to keep abreast of all the new changes. And if you don’t own the game, Morrowind is on sale for $4.49 at Humble Store.
